What Exactly Is Blood Pressure? – Do you know what yours is?

In times of questioned loyalty, we often hear, “blood is thicker than water”, and in a metaphorical sense we easily understand the strong connection that exists within blood relations, no matter how we feel about family. In a more physical and concrete way, such a connection is a reality, especially when discussing blood pressure. We are, in large part, what we have inherited genetically, our health. In terms of blood pressure, a thick history that deserves attention. What exactly is blood pressure?

Sports Medicine Doctor David C. Nieman defines blood pressure as the force of blood against the walls of the arteries and veins created by the heart as it pumps blood to every part of the body. The ease with which blood is pumped through the body is important because blood carries oxygen and nutrients to the cells of the body and removes waste materials and carbon dioxide. Pressure is expressed in two figures, said to be one “over” the other. The systolic pressure, which is the pressure when the left ventricle of the heart contracts to push the blood through the body and the diastolic pressure, is the pressure when the ventricle relaxes and fills with blood.

Of all the things that can contribute to high blood pressure, family history is often the primary contributor. Blood pressure is also affected by the strength of the heartbeat, the volume of blood in the body, the elasticity of the blood vessels and the age and general health of the person. In any case, all the above factors can be greatly helped with a proper exercise regiment, healthy diet and stress management. It is also recommended to consult a physician at least once every two years for a general exam that includes a blood pressure assessment.

In addition, the 1988 Joint National Committee on Detection, Evaluation and Treatment of High Blood Pressure provides the following classification of blood pressure in adults: Systolic – less than 140 is normal, 140-159 is borderline hypertension, and 160+ is hypertension. Diastolic – less than 85 is normal, 85-89 is high-normal, 90-104 is mild hypertension 105-114 is moderate hypertension, 115+ is severe hyper tension. According to Dr. Nieman, hypertension is a condition in which the blood pressure is chronically elevated above optimal levels.
